The market for Professors in Electrical Power Engineering is quite a challenging one and a number of UK universities have had difficulty in making appointments recently.
Cranfield is an attractive proposition as a post graduate only School of Engineering. It offers the benefit of considerable recent investment in new research facilities and office accommodation and the University is ideally situated between the major cities of London and Birmingham, but is in pleasant countryside close to both Milton Keynes and Bedford. The School (the size of a Faculty in most Universities) had a good RAE and its income is from diverse sources rather than mainly from HEFCE.
An extensive search for candidates who could offer the right match of research interests led to a strong short list of candidates. The difficulty in this area more than others is that universities do seem to be quite willing to counter offer to retain their world class researchers. A good appointment was however the ultimate outcome.
